A programme of testing was carried out as part of the proposed N61 Ratallen Road Realignment Scheme. Testing was carried out within a greenfield area (Area 1A) and a wetland area (Area 1B) in the townlands of Ratallen and Runnaboll during August 2012. The assessment followed on from a geophysical survey of the required land-take for the project (Earthsound Licence No. 11R0148 ext). The survey identified various linear anomalies within Test Area 1A and 1B which appeared to represent ditches and removed field boundaries. One significant geophysical anomaly was identified as having archaeological potential, however nothing of archaeological significance was noted during testing at this location.
A total of 1,764.4 linear metres of trenches in Areas 1A and 1B were excavated.
A single archaeological site was discovered during the course of the works. Ratallen 1 consisted of a burnt mound measuring c. 11m by 9m in area.
