Monitoring was carried out for a section of the Flagford – Srananagh 220/110 kV line development in the townland of Grange Beg, Co. Roscommon, approximately 2km south of Boyle, and in the vicinity of RO010-001, a bowl-barrow on a drumlin. A power mast (INT 55) to be constructed approximately 150m south-south-west of the mound was part of a series of new transmission line connections for the ESB across Counties Roscommon and Sligo.
Groundwork to be monitored took place between 22 and 28 February 2012. A temporary access road to the site was constructed using bog mats. This was done as an alternative to stripping the topsoil, although in practice some topsoil stripping was carried out to make the mats more secure. Four holes were dug for the foundations of the mast at the end of the temporary road. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were discovered in the course of this work.
