Excavation took place between 30 July and 1 August 2012 on a site identified during monitoring of works associated with the construction of a wind farm at Mountlucas Bog, Co. Offaly. The site was found to be the remnants of a fulacht fiadh, with a trough and some thin spreads of associated burnt mound material. The trough was sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners, measuring 2.4m x 0.4m and 0.4m and had been cut into the clay subsoil. The spreads of burnt stony material probably represent multiple uses of the site, since there were slight variations in their composition. No traces of a hearth were detected. This type of site normally dates to the Bronze Age and it is to be expected that C14 dating of charcoal from the samples taken will confirm this date.
