Following testing in advance of the N2 Emyvale to Monaghan Road Improvement Scheme, Co. Monaghan, an excavation was undertaken in July 2012 on a disturbed fulacht fiadh in Drumgeeny townland. The site was contained within a 10m x 10m area and survived as a disturbed spread of heat-shattered rock in a charcoal-rich clay matrix overlying sandy subsoil. The burnt spread had dimensions of 6.5m north-south by 7.8m by 0.25m deep. It partially overlay a shallow pit/trough on its southern side. The pit/trough was filled with burnt spread material and cut by a pit on its northern side. Charcoal (ash, hazel, oak and alder) was recovered from environmental samples. No archaeological artefacts were recorded. A radiocarbon date of 2571–2346 BC indicated it was used in the Early Bronze Age period.
