Test excavations were undertaken on the site of a proposed car park, pathways and changing rooms. Three trenches were mechanically excavated on the northern side of Dromore river in County Monaghan and one on the southern side of the river in County Cavan.
The trenches excavated on the northern side of the river revealed stony subsoil just 0.2m below present ground level. The test trench on the southern side of the river was located to the south of the existing car park. It measured 7m long and a deposit of hardcore was uncovered below the sod, indicating that the ground here had been previously disturbed; probably at the time the car park was constructed. The hardcore removed onto a mixed clay deposit that contained 18th- and 19th-century pottery. Subsoil was exposed at a depth of 0.45m. No archaeological features were identified in any of the trenches.
