Stage (i) and Stage (ii) test excavations were carried out on a proposed improvement scheme of the N2 between Monaghan and Emyvale, Co. Monaghan. The testing was undertaken in May–June 2012 on behalf of Monaghan County Council. A total of 33 trenches, amounting to 3436 linear metres, were excavated to the level of subsoil or to the top of archaeological deposits where present. Six individual archaeological sites were identified in Tirnaneill, Enagh, Drumcaw and Drumgeeny townlands. Three of these were resolved under the testing licence on the instruction of the project archaeologist:
• Tirnaneill 1 was an isolated pit filled with burnt mound material at 267414 337695. Charcoal (alder) from the pit was radiocarbon dated to AD 902–1147 (95% probability).
• Tirnaneill 2 was a disturbed fulacht fiadh identified at 267450 337617. Charcoal (hazel) from a pit was radiocarbon dated to 1415–1266 BC (95% probability).
• Enagh 1 was a pit filled with burnt mound material identified at 267589 337442.
Three additional sites were identified at Drumcaw 1 (fulacht fiadh, 267267 338853); Drumgeeny 1 (fulacht fiadh, 267176, 339634) and Drumgeeny 2 (fulacht fiadh, 267242 340204). These were subsequently excavated under separate licence (see Excavations 2012, Nos 485-7).
