Following on from testing conducted on the site in May 2012 (Excavations 2012, No. 483), a programme of monitoring was conducted on the site. During monitoring of a new road and associated car parks around the White Island, evidence for five burnt mounds was uncovered. Between 7 August and 7 September 2012 monitoring and excavation continued in tandem under an extension of the original testing licence. The parts of these burnt mounds that were located within the areas of topsoil stripping were excavated, with the remaining parts of the features being preserved in situ under the undisturbed topsoil. A small number of pit-like features (some of which may have contained troughs) were excavated on the sites. A number of lithic finds were recovered from these sites, as wells as a small amount of prehistoric pottery.
