The area to be tested formed part of the larger Tayto Park development at Kilbrew Co. Meath. A planning application was made for retention of works that had already been carried out. Meath County Council requested further information in relation to some aspects of the retention request including an archaeological impact assessment of the development site. Two monuments (Kilbrew graveyard, ME038-023, and ME038-022, classified as an ‘enclosure’) lie within the confines of Tayto Park.
The site had already been disturbed to the extent that there were areas which had been reduced and built upon and other areas had been covered with topsoil in preparation for landscaping.
Eight trenches tested the site. One of them was excavated through ground that had not been disturbed. Three were excavated through ground which had been slightly reduced and stone placed on top. The remainder were dug through ground on which different amounts of topsoil had been dumped. No archaeological features were exposed and no artefacts were recovered.
