Testing was carried out on 21 September 2012 at Gillstown Townland, Garlow Cross, Co. Meath. The proposed development involves the construction of a number of anaerobic digesters to process farm slurry and other biodegradable waste to produce renewable energy and fertiliser. There are no recorded monuments in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development. Following a request for further information the site was the subject of a geophysical survey carried out by Earthsound. These results indicated the potential presence of a number of potential ditches or relict field boundaries.
Eight test trenches were excavated using a track excavator with a 1.1m wide, bladed ditching bucket. The testing programme involved a comprehensive investigation of the site with a cumulative trench length in excess of 200m. The stratigraphy exposed consisted entirely of uniform natural deposits overlying clay and gravel. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in any of the test areas. The anomalies detected by the geophysical survey may be geological in nature. No finds were retrieved from the site
