The excavation area follows the line of a new storm drain from the N84 road at Shrule, Co Mayo to the Black River beside Shrule Bridge. The pipe trench was excavated through a landscaped grass margin outside the modern boundary wall of Shrule Castle and a small carpark beside the river. The whole area proved to be extensively disturbed by services ranging from a 19th-century drain to electrical cables. Nothing of archaeological interest was identified by this testing.
