A large-scale primary development consisting of a proposed biogas plant and associated site works at Levally, Ballinrobe required test trenches in advance of any works. The client also intended to expand his existing piggery as part of the same project and a total of 21 trenches which varied between 11m and 62m in length were cut by machine. There was no indication of a monument from any part of the site fields which comprised fertile grazing of a slightly undulating nature.
All of the trenches contained natural clay soil on a boulder clay of yellow or orange daub or grey gravel and nothing suggestive of archaeology was evident. Twenty of the trenches were in a green field site where the proposed biogas plant was sited while one long trench was associated with the proposed extension to the piggery. No evidence of archaeological material was found.
