Twelve 2m wide test trenches had been opened in October 2011 (Excavations 2011, No. 452) in advance of the construction of a private dwelling, driveway and percolation area at Knappaghmanagh, Westport. In an attempt to keep as far as possible from the nearby early ecclesiastical enclosure (MA088–058) the percolation area had been originally planned to sit in the adjacent property to the north with the consent of both landowners. However local Council officials unhappy with the percolation area on the lands of a third party, requested that a site further uphill and closer to the monastic site (within 26m of its outer edge) be tested with a view to having it installed here. Seven test trenches were opened here between 7m and 20m long and all contained natural clay topsoil on orange or yellow daub or gravel, and yielded modern glazed pottery. There was no evidence of any archaeological features or contexts from the testing.
