An assessment was required in response to a further information request for retention of an extension to an existing dwelling and domestic garage at Gortnadrehy, located 0.7km east of Knockmore, Co. Mayo.
There are two recorded archaeological sites in close proximity to this development, MA048-050001 Ringfort-rath and MA048-050002 Souterrain. Both sites are recorded to the immediate south of development boundary. MA048-050001 is indicated as being approx. 5m south of southern boundary wall and MA048-050002 is indicated as being approx. 20m south of southern boundary wall. There are no visible remains of either of these sites on the ground today or on aerial photographs examined for the site.
Testing was carried out within the footprint of the area for retention, at the location of the proposed percolation area and along the route of proposed discharge pipe. A total of 6 trenches were excavated. Trenches 1 and 2 measured 1m x 5m and were located on the footprint of proposed percolation area, Trenches 3-6 were located along the route of the proposed discharge pipe and measured 0.5m x 3m.
No archaeological finds or features were exposed during the course of testing.
