The flood embankment at Bellurgan, Co. Louth, extends along the eastern shore of the Flurry River estuary that feeds into Dundalk Harbour. The embankment runs south from Ballymascanlon townland to the north shoreline of Bellurgan Point, formerly Tippings Point. The existing flood embankment replaces an earlier sequence of embankment that was located on the landward side of the present construction. Intertidal assessment observed that the embankment is built against the former railway embankment for the L&NWR at Bellurgan Point. The flood embankment is of recent date but retains an interest as part of a wider system of flood and reclamation defences around Dundalk Bay that date most obviously from the 19th century, but may well have earlier origins.
