Monitoring works for the upgrading of water treatment works at Lough Kinale (Granard RWSS) and Abbeyshrule (Ballymahon RWSS), and the upgrading of Rathcronan Booster Pumping Station took place through various townlands including Springtown, Tonymore North, Abbylara, Ballyboy, Rincoolagh, Robinstown, Aghabrack, Ballymaurice, Higganstown, Teemore and Rathcronan between August 2011 and March 2012. Much of the groundworks took place along the verges of existing third class roadways using directional drilling equipment. Given this methodology, full time monitoring was not required in many sections but regular inspections were carried out of launch and receptor pits in areas of archaeological potential. In areas where bedrock proved to be an obstacle, standard open trenches were excavated to an average width of 0.75m by 1.1m in depth.
The general stratigraphy consisted of topsoil over a mid-brown silty clay overlying a yellow brown natural clay with a moderate amount of rock. Pockets of peat were also noted. Throughout the course of the programme no finds or features of archaeological significance were identified.
