Monitoring was undertaken of construction works at St Mary’s Cathedral, Bridge Street, King’s Island, Limerick intermittently over the course of 2012. The only archaeological features identified were discovered to the rear of the cathedral located between the brick extension and the boundary wall with Nicholas Street. The archaeological remains appear to be part of a stone wall, but as this was only partially exposed, it was not possible to form a definitive interpretation as to its function. The identified archaeological remains were retained in situ and were not impacted on by the development in this area.
Disarticulated bone was recovered from all areas of development outside the cathedral, particularly in the area adjacent to the boiler room. These disarticulated remains were analysed by osteo-archaeologist Lynda Lynch.
