Monitoring was carried out in relation to the proposed construction of Section 1 and 2 of the Kilmallock waste water scheme. The work was undertaken at a greenfield site and monitored between 19 September and 29 November 2012

A programme of test trenching and an archaeological impact assessment of the scheme was carried out previously by Tara Doyle under Ministerial Consent (Excavations 2007, No. 1120, C175/E2892). Archaeological remains were identified on the south of the scheme but no features of archaeological significance were identified in Section 1 or 2 which is currently proposed for development. The entire area of the scheme was however deemed to be of high archaeological potential due to its proximity to the historic town of Kilmallock and so monitoring of all groundworks was recommended.

recommended.
During monitoring topsoil (0.39m average depth of brown silty clay) was stripped across the greenfield areas as well as trenches excavated through the road surface. Natural subsoil (light yellow brown silty clay) was exposed and examined for any archaeological remains; however no archaeological deposits or features were identified.
