Excavation was carried out at Garryduff 1 as part of the N21 Killarney Pole to Barnagh Road Realignment. The route was initially subject to testing in 2011 by Dave Bayley (Excavations 2011, No. 404, 11E349) and three areas of archaeological potential were identified within the townland of Garryduff (1-3). The main activity at Garryduff 1 appeared to be focussed on a pit. This appears to have been a cooking pit and was filled with charcoal-rich fire debris and heat-shattered stone. There was no evidence of in situ burning. Two post-holes were recorded on either side of pit and they may represent the upright posts of a rack or a spit. A sample of Prunus sp. charcoal from the fill of pit was chosen for AMS dating. The charcoal returned a 2 Sigma calibrated carbon14 date of 1371–1060 BC, indicating a date in the mid-late Bronze Age period for this feature.
