A programme of excavation was carried out prior to the development of the N69 Bolane Bends Improvement Scheme. The site at Bolane 2 was discovered during advance testing along the proposed realignment undertaken in June 2012 by Sébastien Joubert, of the NRA (Excavations 2012, No. 386, 12E161). Excavation work at Bolane 2 was undertaken on behalf of Limerick County Council and it took place between 4 and 23 July 2012. The archaeological remains excavated consisted of a large burnt mound positioned on the north-facing slope of a rocky outcrop. The burnt mound sealed a sub-rectangular trough and the associated mound of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-rich soil measured 16m x 11m and was 0.8m deep.
