Test excavation of limited trenches, followed by open area excavation to the upper levels of archaeological deposits on the footprint of the north aisle of the medieval parish church, was undertaken in the latter part of 2012. The church has been acquired by KBC and is intended for reuse as a visitor facility for the city. Demolished walls which indicate the plan of several phases of aisles were uncovered on both the north and south side of the nave, along with several tombs and crypts. Footings of the demolished chancel walls were also uncovered. No excavation of medieval deposits has taken place to date, but it is anticipated that newly uncovered masonry features will be an integral part of the conservation and design of St Mary’s as a visitor facility.
