Monitoring was conducted of excavation works associated with the laying of gas pipes for St Canice’s Resource Centre on Church Lane and Common Hall Lane, Kilkenny. The monitoring was carried out to comply with a condition of planning from Kilkenny Borough Council. Prior to the commencement of monitoring a pipe trench (Intervention 3) had been partially dug through human burials on Church Lane, 7m east of the east wall of the chancel of the 13th-century cathedral of Saint Canice. Once work was halted it was determined that three in situ burials had been disturbed. The remains of these burials were recorded in situ and sampled for radiocarbon dating. Osteological analysis of the burials by James Cahill determined they were all adults and they were subsequently radiocarbon dated to between the 7th and 10th centuries AD.
