Site 5-5 Garrynamann Upper was discovered during monitoring of topsoil stripping for the Bord Gáis Networks Gas to Great Island scheme (above No. 334, 12E0356). Site 5-5 encompassed an area of 30m2 and revealed a kiln and linear ditch.
A keyhole-shaped kiln was located at the eastern limit of the excavation and extended beyond it. The kiln was aligned east-west with the bowl at the western end. The kiln measured 3m east-west, was 1m wide at the flue and 1.7m wide at the bowl and 0.35m deep. There was little evidence of in situ burning in the bowl cut and along the flue, suggesting that the kiln may have only been used a limited number of times before it was abandoned or went out of use.
The ditch was orientated east-west and was 4.4m long, between 1.2-1.8m wide and 0.58-0.95m deep. There was no obvious terminal for the ditch.
