Test excavations took place in the townlands of Damerstown West and Julianstown along the proposed N78 Damerstown West to Julianstown Bend Improvement Scheme in County Kilkenny. Nineteen test trenches (aggregate length 370 linear metres) were excavated within portions of two fields proposed to be acquired for construction. A bawn (KK010-098002) and two 17th-century houses (KK010-098001 & 3), which were depicted on the Down Survey map, are listed in the Sites and Monuments Record under Damerstown West townland. The exact location of these structures is not presently known. Test excavations were undertaken to assess the archaeological impact of the development and to establish if any sub-surface remains of the bawn or houses could be identified in the agricultural land (2.1ha) to be acquired for the construction of the scheme. No features of archaeological significance were identified. However, access could not be arranged for a third field along the route of the proposed scheme; this field will be test-trenched at a later date.
