Site 3-3 Cotterellsrath was discovered during monitoring of topsoil stripping for the Bord Gáis Networks Gas to Great Island scheme (above No. 334, 12E0356). The site was located in a level ploughed tillage field encompassing an area of 96.67m2 and revealed evidence of four pits and two post-holes. One of the pits contained an inverted urn and another cremated bone. There was a post-hole adjacent to the urn pit that could have indicated an above-ground marker. There was only a small quantity of burnt bone within the cremation pit, and the pieces recovered were of a small size, which might suggest that the deposit represents a ‘token’ burial where only a handful of cremated bone or pyre debris was buried. In the absence of dating evidence or stratigraphic relationships it is not known if the features are of one phase of activity.
