Site 9-6 Baunreagh was discovered during monitoring of topsoil stripping for the Bord Gáis Networks Gas to Great Island scheme (above No. 334, 12E0356). The site was located in flat pasture encompassing an area of 30m2 and revealed ring barrow(s) and post-medieval linear features.
Phase A
A possible ring ditch was located on the site. Only the northern and eastern ‘arcs’ of the possible ring ditch remained. The western side of the feature was truncated. There was an entrance break at the north-east point of the possible ring ditch where the arcs have rounded terminals. An unidentified stone object, a possible axe fragment, was also retrieved from the ring ditch. A post-hole was located within the northern ‘arc’. The circular cut was very shallow but had the appearance of the base of a post-hole. The single fill was the same as the fill of the possible ring ditch.
Phase B
The possible ring ditch was sealed by redeposited natural. The yellowish brown clayey silt was moderately to heavily compacted, was spread over an area of 6.5m in diameter and had a maximum depth of 0.4m.
Phase C
A penannular ring ditch was cut into the Phase B redeposit but was itself truncated by a later field boundary. Two arcs of the ring ditch survived with an entrance break, 0.5m wide, to the south-east where the arcs have rounded terminals.
Phase D
Phase D is represented by a post-medieval curvilinear drainage ditch, drains and a furrow.
