Monitoring has taken place of topsoil stripping for the Bord Gáis Networks Gas to Great Island scheme. The pipeline construction commences at an existing above ground installation at Baunlusk, Co. Kilkenny to the Endesa Power Station at Great Island, Co. Wexford. The pipeline is approximately 46km long, the pipeline corridor is 100m wide and the pipeline route is nominally 40m wide within that corridor. The pipeline will extend across 42 townlands in Co. Kilkenny and one in Co. Wexford. The monitoring of the construction work commenced in September 2012 and is ongoing into 2013.
Numerous sites ranging from the prehistoric to the post-medieval period were uncovered during the monitoring works. A number of the sites were excavated under the monitoring licence and will be detailed in the 2013 entry to this publication. The remainder were excavated under individual licence numbers. A total of twenty four sites were given individual licences in 2012 and these are 12E333 (below No. 366), 12E338 (below No. 344), 12E388-396 (below Nos 343, 345, 346, 348, 625, 624, 350, 626 and 627 respectively), 12E408-410 (below Nos 370, 365 and 337 respectively), 12E415-420 (below Nos 342, 338, 340, 336 and 341 respectively, but 12E417 will be excavated in 2013), 12E430, 12E441 and 12E444-445, all to be excavated in 2013. The entries on these excavations carried out under these licences are given elsewhere in this volume.
