Monitoring was carried out in a total of three areas, located within the townlands of Old Kilcullen, Wevil, Ballyshannon Demesne, Carrighill Lower and Upper, Ballyshannon and Tippeenan Upper and Lower, County Kildare. The programme of work was undertaken as part of the Kildare Water Supply Strategy.
Area 1 consisted of greenfield, which was crossed by 500m of a new access route to the existing Old Kilcullen reservoir. Topsoil stripping of the road was monitored but no features of archaeological potential were identified. Areas 2 and 3 consisted of two sections of the pipeline trench, which were excavated within the R418. Area 2 measured just over 1km in length and travelled to the south of KD028-058/032-003 and an area of archaeological potential (IA3). A post-medieval stone culvert was identified during monitoring, which may have formed part of a water feature that was once associated with Ballyshannon House. However, no other features of archaeological potential were identified. Area 3 consisted of a section of pipeline that measured 300m in length. The trench was confined to the R418 but passed to the immediate south of a burial ground (KD032-002) and a former mill site (IA4). No features of archaeological potential were noted within this section.
