A variation to a previously granted Ministerial Consent for the test excavation of areas of the Abbey Car Park (to Frank Coyne, Excavations 2008, No. 637) was required to allow the redesign and resurfacing of this car parking area. The removal of all older street furniture and pathways was monitored and no archaeological features or strata were encountered as the works were within the known level of fill material above the abbey ruins, a National Monument in local authority ownership. Resurfacing will be onto existing tarmac surface with no impact on the archaeological monument.
