The Kinvara Sewerage Scheme proposes the construction of a new waste water treatment facility, marine outfall and associated foul and surface sewers in and around the village of Kinvara, Co. Galway.

The Geotechnical Site Investigations aspect of the scheme was subjected to a non-intrusive Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA) prepared by Byrne Mullins & Associates. The AIA suggested that monitoring of the excavation of specific trial pits and slit trenches be undertaken and this mitigation strategy was agreed with the National Monuments Service. The monitoring programme was undertaken on a phased basis from 4 October – 22 November 2012.

A total of twenty trial pits, all in greenfield areas, and eleven slit trenches, along the streets within the town, were monitored. In all cases, all the spoil generated by the excavations was ‘raked-over’ in an attempt to increase the potential for the recovery of archaeological artefacts.

No features of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the testing. A single sherd of North Devon Gravel Free ware and a small number of modern items - 19th/20th-century pottery, iron and glass - were found in  trenches located along ‘The Quay’ and in all cases came from an underlying layer of stony ‘made ground.’
