Monitoring of groundworks at a development at Annaghkeen was carried out on 20 March 2012.  The proposed development consisted of an extension to an existing dwelling.  Monitoring was necessary due to the proximity of the site to a mound (GA055-003), located adjacent to the east of the dwelling.  The mound is described in the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway as ‘a low poorly preserved and densely overgrown almost circular mound (D c. 21.5m) with a central depression, suggesting some robbing out of material’.  The Inventory states that it was known locally as ‘An Carn Bheag’. There is evidence of groundworks around the mound in recent years.

The proposed development site was located on a north-west facing slope near the eastern shore of Lough Corrib.  The existing dwelling was constructed in the second half of the 20th century with a flat roofed garage along its southern side.  The groundworks consisted of the excavation of strip foundations for the extension and a terrace.  The proposed extension and terrace were located across an exiting concrete pavement and gravel drive.

The stratigraphy consisted of modern fill material and concrete on the surface above natural subsoils.  Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed and no artefacts were recovered.  The evidence suggested that the area of the development was disturbed during the construction of the existing dwelling and garage.
