Stage (i)a Standard Test Excavation Services were carried out on 12 November 2012 on behalf of Galway County Council. The works were undertaken prior to the commencement of construction works associated with the N63 Carrownabo Realignment Scheme, Co. Galway.

At Stage (i)a a total of seven test trenches were excavated in five fields comprising a total of 310 linear metres of trenching. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance were identified.

A conjoined ringfort GA045‐036 lies at the south‐western limit of the proposed realignment. The existing N63 road bisects the monument and the current realignment will impact the small surviving portion of upstanding bank (and any related features which are as yet undiscovered) lying to the immediate south of the road. The monument was subject to a separate Stage of Archaeological Services which were carried out under a separate licence 12E0404 (below No. 290).
