This entry presents the results of Stage (i) Test Excavation Services and Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services carried out on behalf of Galway County Council. The works were undertaken as part of the Archaeological Services Contract (2012) prior to the commencement of construction works associated with the N84 Luimnagh Realignment Scheme, Co. Galway. This was the second phase of archaeological investigation on the scheme following on from a previous contract dealing with the offline southern section which was also carried out by Rubicon Heritage Services.

Stage (i) Test Excavation and Survey Services were carried out between 9 and 13 July 2012. A total of 53 test trenches were excavated across 17 fields, comprising a total of 2629 linear metres of trenching. A single, previously unrecorded archaeological site, Keernaun 1, was identified within Field 1.

Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (additional trenching, cleaning and mapping of the area of archaeological potential identified during Stage (i) test trenching) were carried out on 11 July 2012. Stage (ii) Services confirmed the archaeological significance of Keernaun 1 which consists of a burnt mound.  It is proposed that Keernaun 1 be fully excavated in advance of the construction of the road (12E0288, see above No. 282).
