A programme of testing of a proposed single residential development at Corlackan, Creggs, Co. Galway was undertaken following a pre-planning enquiry made to the National Monuments Service. The development plot is located close to monuments, one to the west (GA019-008 – a poorly preserved enclosure site) and one uphill to the south (GA019-009 – a partially destroyed ringfort). These are located at distances of c. 65m and 100m respectively from the from the closest site boundaries.
A total of eighteen test trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development. All trenches were initially excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases of the trenches were cleaned by hand and visually examined. In addition, all the spoil generated by the excavation of the test trenches was ‘raked-over’ in an attempt to increase the potential for the recovery of archaeological artefacts.
No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the testing.
