Monitoring and metal detection was conducted at the site of a single dwelling house in Cloonkeenkerril townland, Co. Galway. The house is located in close proximity to ecclesiastical remains (GA072-014) and a field system (GA072-01401). Planning permission for the retension of a revised fully-serviced dwelling including a treatment plant and polishing filter was received by Galway County Council.  The site was visited by Hugh Carey, archaeologist with the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.  During his visit a shard of possible medieval pottery and a fragmet of iron slag were retrieved from a spoil heap to the immediate north of the dwelling house.  It was recommended that any further works at the site be monitored and the levelling of spoil heads metal detected.

The monitoring and metal detecting were undertaken in March 2012. Monitoring of a treatment plant, percolation area and excavations for a geothermal heating unit was undertaken over a period of two days. In addition spoil heaps in the north, east and west of the dwelling house were partially removed and subjected to a metal detection survey.  Due to lack of space on the site it was not possible to spread the spoil thinly and this is being delayed until the soil is spread for landscaping purposes at a later date. No artefacts or features of archaeological significance were encountered in the course of monitoring and metal detection.
