EXCAVATION DESCRIPTIONAn archaeological impact assessment including testing was undertaken at a proposed development site in Ardrahan North, Co. Galway. The development site is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential surrounding the Historic Town of Ardrahan (GA114-001). The site is located to the south-east of the Market Square and the development boundaries extend south-east from a frontage onto the square. The site is located at c. 8m OD. Until recently, a detached vernacular thatched cottage was located along the building line to the front of the site.
Five test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the development site on 29 March 2012. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in any of the five trenches.
