A programme of monitoring was undertaken of enabling works or geotechnical investigations involving the excavation of 51 geotechnical test pits (TP101-154) and 6 percolation pits (SW101-106). These investigations formed part of the enabling works for the development of the Grangegorman Campus, Dublin 7.

Sub-surface structural remains were identified at a number of locations. In the west campus structural remains were identified in TP130-4, TP139, TP142, TP142A, TP149, TP149A and TP154 and in the east campus at TP148. In most cases these can be related to previous structures shown on OS mapping dating to 1847 and 1876. An oxidised deposit was noted in TP123 that could be indicative of the location of a brick-clamp or brickfield-type activity. In the majority of the trenches excavated it was evident that ground level at the site had been raised either by the deposition of rubble deposits (perhaps from phases of demolition at the site) and/or the importation of topsoil. This suggests that there is a good potential for any sub-surface archaeological features pre-dating the development of the institutional buildings at the site to survive.
