Excavation of test trenches at the site at Killybegs Pier was carried out on 18 July, in advance of the construction of a coastguard station. The proposed development is situated on the newly constructed pier, in an area where a substantial amount (several meters) of fill was imported during construction. Six trenches were opened across the footprint of the proposed development, and were cut through the tarmac. All were 1.5m wide. Modern fill was encountered in all of the trenches. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered in any of the test trenches. The island of Rough Point on which the pier has been constructed was previously excavated by the writer in 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 285, 01E0807).
