A programme of testing was carried out in March 2012 as part of the proposed N56 Coolboy to Kilmacrennan Road Realignment Scheme. Testing was undertaken within four greenfield areas (Area 1/1, 1/3, 1/5 and 1/7) and four wetland areas (Area 1/2, 1/4, 1/6 and 1/8) in the townlands of Coolboy Big, Cashelgay and Ballykeeran. This testing follows on from an Environmental Impact Report carried out by Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers in September 2011. A total of 2,614 linear metres of trenches were excavated. No sites of archaeological significance were identified during advance testing in these seven areas. It was not possible to carry out testing within Test Area 1/6 as the access was too limited for machine testing within this small area.
