Monitoring of invasive groundworks was undertaken during October – November 2012 at the site of proposed development at Nos 8–14 Bishop Street, Derry, Co. Derry. This site is located within the historical centre of the City of Derry on the south-east side of Bishop Street Within and is bounded by commercial properties on all other sides. The proposed development is to comprise the replacement of the existing buildings to provide comfortable and modern office accommodation for a community development association, the Holywell Trust, which facilitates projects in the community within the Derry/Londonderry city and urban areas as well as cross-border region.
Monitoring works included all necessary works associated with the completion of the scheme and comprised the monitoring of the controlled demolition of the existing buildings and removal of foundations and the subsequent excavation of foundations for the construction of the new buildings. Invasive groundworks included foundation trenches for internal walls, trenches for drainage insertion and limited ground reduction works at the rear of the properties.
Monitoring works were relatively limited in scope and no archaeological features or deposits were identified during monitoring works at the site.
