Monitoring of dredging works associated with the construction of two outfall pipes for the Baltimore Waste Water Treatment Plant was undertaken in Baltimore, Co. Cork. The monitoring of back-hoe dredging was achieved through constant visual inspection of the excavator bucket as it came out of the water and deposited the material immediately alongside the trench. The material mainly consisted of a layer of softly compacted silt overlying undulating bedrock. The trench was excavated to a depth of 2m. One small fragment of a poorly preserved timber plank was recovered from the trench. No other timbers or associated artefacts were recovered. The timber fragment may represent a plank scattered from the site of a shipwreck within Baltimore Harbour.
