A licensed intertidal and metal detector survey of a proposed sewage outfall pipeline route was carried out at Slatty Water, Tullygreen, Carrigtohill, Co. Cork. The site is a tidal estuary located in the upper reaches of Cork Harbour, between the mainland and Fota Island. The pipeline will extend from a wastewater treatment plant at Slatty Bridge north-west across the estuary for a distance of c. 800m. There are no Recorded Monuments within the site boundary.

A metal detector survey along the route of the proposed outfall pipe and a visual survey of the surrounding intertidal landscape were carried out at low water both on foot and from a boat. The upper foreshore comprised gravelly mud with seaweed growth, and modern rubbish and debris were visible. At c. 10m from the shoreline the mud became soft, was grey-brown to black in colour and was up to 3m deep. The mud flats were clean and free from modern debris.

Previously unrecorded archaeological features were not noted during the survey. Manmade material which was pinpointed with the metal detector included modern cans and poles. There were no metal detector hits on the mudflats or in the deepwater channel.

Monitoring was recommended for the construction stage of the development.
