The proposed development site is located on the site of a church and graveyard (CO085-136 and 13601). There is no surface trace of either the church or graveyard, however, according to the owner of the site, local tradition has it that the church was located c. 60-80m further to the north. The exact location is not known. There is a tradition of a burial ground separate from the church c. 300m to the south towards Ballinora Cross but he is not sure of the exact location. A Geophysical Survey was carried out on the site as part of the Request for Further Information and no significant responses were identified although some anomalies were noted. Testing of these anomalies was recommended.
Testing was carried out on the site in April 2012. Three trenches were opened across the lines of the anomalies identified in the geophysical survey. No evidence for the church or graveyard listed in the RMP was found in the trenches. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted.
