Monitoring was undertaken at the site of a supermarket development in the townland of Leagard North to the immediate east of Miltown Malbay town centre. The development involves the construction of a supermarket incorporating an off-licence and ancillary facilities, all-weather playing pitch with associated fencing/lighting, car parking and associated works. Condition 19 of the order made by An Bord Pleanála required an archaeologist to monitor all site works relating to the development.

The site is connected to the main street of Miltown Malbay by a narrow laneway. Monitoring of topsoil stripping found that the development will not impact on any features or artefacts of archaeological significance. The monitoring found sod and topsoil layers over a grey/brown silty clay that was very sticky when wet. Finds from the topsoil layer consisted of occasional fragments of 20th-century ceramic and glass and two fragments of clay pipe.
