Monitoring of Phases B and C of the Carlow flood relief scheme was undertaken between July 2012 and January 2013. The programme of works involved the demolition of the old flood wall on the southern bank of the River Burrin running west from Burrin Street Bridge to the confluence of the River Barrow. A section of the southern river bank was also removed to facilitate the widening of the mouth of the Burrin River where it meets the River Barrow. Excavation of the foundation trenches for the new flood barrier revealed no features of archaeological interest. A good deal of modern debris was noted in the material from the foundation trenches. A clay pipe bowl and a cut stone with the initials “T H” and the year 1834 were recovered from the foundation trench and a section of the old flood wall respectively.
