Monitoring of ground reduction works was carried out in advance of the erection of a Celtic stone cross at Callan Street, Armagh city, in response to a planning condition imposed upon the development. The site is located within the historic core of Armagh being less than 100m to the west of St Patrick’s Cathedral, therefore representing an area of high archaeological potential. Monitored excavation of both the footprint of the cross slab and an access ramp leading to it to a depth of between 0.5–2m below current ground levels revealed that the bulk of material represented infill material dating from the post-medieval to modern period. No archaeological remains were identified during the course of monitoring works.
