Monitoring was carried out during 2013 as part of the re-development of Liberty House, Railway Street, Dublin 1. Ground works were confined to the excavation of trenches on all four sides of the site, as well as the clearance of modern concrete foundations at the centre of the site. Previous monitoring of geo-technical investigation pits indicated the presence of early 18th-century industrial waste, 18th-century garden/plot features and 19th-century structures and features (Giacometti, 2011; Licence Ref.: 11E169). It was clear during monitoring that the site had been subject to a large amount of disturbance, with the presence of concrete foundations noted across the site. A number of fragmented red brick walls were noted in portions of the site and these relate to the former residential streets that once covered the entire site and were demolished in the 1930s. In the western part of the site the remains of Purdon Street itself were identified within the excavated trench. The road surface was intact, along with the concrete footpath kerbs on both sides. The road was 3.7m wide and the pavements were approximately 1.5m wide. No features of archaeological significance were identified during the course of the works.
