An archaeological evaluation was conducted at a proposed development site at No. 7 Drum Road Kells, Co. Antrim (Ballymacvea Td.) This proposed development concerns the construction of an anaerobic digestion plant.
The proposed development site lies within an archaeologically sensitive area with five recorded sites within a 1km radius. The closest recorded site, an enclosure (ANT044-001), is located approximately 45m to the south.
Three test trenches were excavated across the proposed development. Three deposits of archaeological potential were identified within Trench 2. All were found concentrated towards the south-east end of the trench. Two of the deposits were interpreted as likely pits or post-holes. A third larger deposit measuring 8m in length and between 1.5m and 0.3m wide was found to contain fragments of burnt bone. It is likely this linear feature represents a series of inter-cutting pits that have been in-filled with similar deposits. However, further investigation would be required to confirm this.
