Monitoring of ‘mounding’ earthworks associated with the planting of 5ha of forestry at Richfield was undertaken during November and December 2011. The groundworks monitored involved the excavation of a series of parallel trenches, which were approximately 0.4m wide and 8m apart, across the entirety of the site. The site is located immediately to the south-west of WX046-101, a pair of historic gate pillars.

Archaeological deposits, all of which appear to be related to prehistoric burnt mound activity, were uncovered at six separate points around the planting site. The archaeological sites, as uncovered, measured between 1m and 11.5m in extent. In all six sites the archaeological material was uncovered in the side or the base of a mounding trench and was cleaned by hand. Following the recording of the visible archaeological deposits, the trenches were partially backfilled and a 15m buffer zone was established around each site. No planting was undertaken within these buffer zones.
