Pre-construction test-trenching was conducted on 27–28 June 2011 at the site of a proposed water treatment plant at the location of an existing but disused water treatment plant at Portloman townland, on the south-western shore of Lough Owel, Mullingar. This work was carried out on behalf of Bowen Ltd/AECOM Ltd and Westmeath County Council. Testing was required to mitigate any impact the development might have on unknown archaeology, based on the development’s proximity to the early medieval Portloman Abbey site (WM011-145).
Six test trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator within the footprint of the proposed development. No archaeology was identified in any of the trenches.
