Testing was undertaken as part of a request for further information prior to an extension to Fan Glas housing estate at Adamstown, Kilmeaden. There is no Recorded Monument within the site or in its immediate environs, nor did site inspection reveal any sites or areas of significant archaeological potential. The area of the proposed development had been largely cleared of topsoil to a depth of c. 0.4m in 2006 and covered with hardcore to depths varying from 0.1m to 0.2m to create a site compound for the first phase of the housing development, for which no archaeological condition had been included as part of the grant of planning permission.
It had been proposed to excavate eight test trenches, but owing to the extreme impacts of previous works on the site and restrictions arising from services six trenches were considered sufficient to provide a comprehensive coverage of the site. In general the topsoil was absent from the site and the subsoil was excavated to the underlying rock. Where topsoil did survive there was no indication that the site contained any archaeological features. No anomalies were observed in the subsoil.
